A
cholera epidemic might be in the offing as an outbreak has been reported in
Plateau state resulting in the death of 3 people with an additional 34 already
hospitalized.
Chairman
of Wase local government, Zakari Abdul on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 told
newsmen that the outbreak was reported n Gambur area of the council on Sunday,
August 3, 2014 leading to the loss of 3 lives. continue...
Abdul
while bemoaning the lost lives however added that the 34 people hospitalized
are currently receiving and responding to treatment by the councils medical
staff.
Thisday
reports:
Stating that he has reported the matter to the Ministry
of Health for assistance considering the number of persons affected in order to
avoid the possibility of an epidemic, he urged residents of the affected area
and of the entire council to be hygienic in order to prevent its spread.
People should ensure that they properly wash their hands
before eating food, wash vegetables and fruits very well before eating, as well
as have good and clean toilet, he said.
The Health Commissioner, Dr Fom Dakwak, confirmed the
development, saying that the state government had dispatched a medical team
from the ministry with drugs and other facilities to the affected areas.
Speaking through the Director of Primary Health Care
Department, Mr. Ayuba Ahuta, the council chief said this was the second time
the council was experiencing cholera outbreak, as two persons died last month
while 40 were affected in the outbreak in Gaji, Zak and Wase town.
