
West African Examination Council (WAEC) on Thursday released
this year’s November/December, West African Senior School Certificate
Examination (WASSCE) with 72,522 candidates representing 29.37 per cent
obtaining credits in five subjects and above including English language and
Mathematics.
The
council also withheld the results of 28,817 candidates representing 11.67 per
cent in connection with various cases of examination malpractice.
Addressing
newsmen on Thursday at the WAEC headquarters in Yaba, Head of the Nigeria
National Office, Charles Eguridu, explained that a total of 246,853 candidates
consisting of 132,521 male and 114,332 female candidates sat for the
examination.
He
said of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 75,313
candidates representing 30.50 per cent obtained six credits and above, 110,346
candidates representing 44.70 per cent obtained five credits and above

while comparing the result of this year to that of last year, noted that there
is a marked increase in candidates performance as the 2013 November/December
recorded 26,97 per cent.
He
further said the council had introduced the ‘walk in candidates’ registration
which allows intending candidates who were unable to register during the normal
registration period to register and sit for the examination, adding that for
the November/December WASSCE, a total of 701 walk in candidates registered and
sat for the examination.
Speaking
further he said cases of those results that were being withheld were being
investigated and the reports of the investigations would be presented to the
Nigeria Examination Committee (NEC) of the council for consideration, stressing
that the committee’s decisions would be communicated to the affected candidates
in due course.
He
also noted that of a total of 48 blind candidates registered for and sat for
the examiantion, four candidates representing 8.33 per cent obtained credits in
five subject including English language and Mathematics.
However,
Eguridu said candidates who sat for the examiantion would be able to check the
details of their performance on the council’s result’s website:
www.waecdirect.org within the next 48 hours.
