The reported killing of a top Boko Haram leader said to be Abubakar Shekau has again ignited another round of controversy between Nigerian and Cameroonian troops, and even concerned Nigerians.
Also, a top Nigerian military
intelligence source has said the Boko Haram figure killed in a recent operation
was not the REAL Shekau but Bashir Mohammed, leader of the Islamist sect’s Uye
camp.
The late Mr. Bashir, who bore a
striking resemblance to Abubakar Shekau, was killed as he led insurgents who
were attempting to capture Konduga and then made a bid to seize Maiduguri.
Now Nigeria military is claiming
they killed the man, but Cameroon military are the ones releasing the photos of
the dead man. So, how did Cameroon get into our battle filed to take pictures
of a dead terrorist? What is really going on?
Anyway, known Boko Haram
negotiator, Ahmed Salkida, has denied claims that Shekau is dead.
The Dubai-based Nigerian journalist said he has it on authority that
the REAL Shekau is chilling.
It would be recalled that
Cameroonian authorities had released a photo of a dead man they identified as
the real Abubakar Shekau, the loquacious and attention-seeking leader of the
terrorist group that has launched deadly strikes in Nigeria’s northeast zone as
well as parts of Northern Cameroon.
Nigerian military has however
insisted that they are incharge and Cameroon has no business in our territory.
