A matron who attended to
Liberian-born American, Patrick Sawyer in a Lagos hospital before he died of
Ebola, is now showing symptoms of the virus.
This was disclosed by the Chairman
of Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Dr. Tope Ojo,

Earlier, the Minister of Health,
Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, had revealed that a female medical doctor, who also
participated in taking care of Sawyer had contracted the deadly virus.
Ojo who said the female doctor was
stable added that, apart from the female medical doctor and the matron, six
other people suspected to have been infected with the virus are being
quarantined at the IDH, Yaba.
He said, We know that the
infected doctor is stable, however, the matron is showing symptoms too. But
everybody, including the experts from the World Health Organisation, are doing
all they can.
According to Punch report, Dr. Ojo
said that 30 striking doctors had volunteered to attend to the medical needs of
all those with Ebola-related case.
She explained that the NMA was
having a challenge getting volunteers to be part of the Ebola Case Management
Committee because the doctors are worried over the danger the virus poses to
their lives and they need reassurance, while also stressing the need for the
government to put adequate measures in place to assure health workers of their
safety in stemming the virus.
Meanwhile two American doctors who
contracted the disease in Liberia had been given an experimental drug, ZMapp
and their condition was said to have improved. According to a report on Bloomberg
Businessweek, Nigeria was considering applying for a dose of the experimental
Ebola therapy to treat the Lagos female doctor.
Health officials in Lagos revealed
that there are 8 suspected cases of infection with Ebola, all these people were
in contact with Sawyer, the first victim of the virus in Nigeria.
Ebola is has killed hundreds of
people in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia and it is spread through body
fluids.
